BIOGRAPHY

Martin was born in Portsmouth, the eldest of three sons to a motor mechanic and a home maker. He was brought up in a village in the suburbs and attended the local primary school prior Comprehensive. During his teens, Martin’s work was chosen for exhibition at the Great Hall, Winchester (Hampshire Association for Art Education). After VIth Form College, Martin started a short-lived banking career before applying to Art School. During an imminent gap year, he exhibited with photographer Thomas Schlieben, at the Mountbatten Gallery, and was offered a solo show at the city Arts Centre – reviewed by Due South Now as “startling and enchanting”. He returned to Art School to study Design and Fine Art, moving on to Combined Arts at Brighton.

Following teacher training, Martin relocated to London and worked for a year as a video editor at MTV. He has since led scholastic departments in both Music and Art. An unplanned career break was particularly fruitful, proffering numerous exhibitions and education projects. Varied works have featured in competition at the Candid Arts Trust and the Menier Gallery, whilst installation pieces were twice selected for the front page of Axis. Martin has completed painting commissions for Plincke Landscape and Network Rail. His exhibitions include a group show at the Start Gallery (Brighton) and a solo show at London City Airport. Martin holds an MA in Art Education (London) with a grade A dissertation held at the Newsam Library.

At VIth Form College, Martin’s tutor was installation artist Frank Jennings who encouraged Martin to apply to Art School. Tutors at Portsmouth School of Art included multi-media practitioner Ken Devine, illustrator Jacqui Mair and sculptor Bruce Williams. As an undergraduate at Brighton, Martin’s tutor was Scottish composer and choreographer Billy Cowie.
